Preparing the Christmas Feast!

One of the most awaited even during the holidays is the preparation of foods for Christmas dinner. In some places, people prepare a feast that can feed the whole neighborhood! Our family is one of those that prepare lot of food during the holiday because we get to have visitors from far friends, families and acquaintances. We tend to offer carolers with food that we’ve prepared much to their delight! One of our specialties is the Valenciana Paella which is a Spanish recipe consists of sticky rice, some sea food, chicken, pork, livers and some vegetables too. This rich mix of grains, meat and vegetables simply has a lot of flavourings that tickles the taste buds and satisfies the palate.

A huge pan of Valenciana Paella looks really colorful surrounded with other Christmas dinner staples such as salads, ham or turkey, grilled pork belly and so much more! After attending Christmas Eve mass, we’re all looking forward to the food we have prepared and will share with the rest of the family. What makes these foods taste really good I guess is that it was prepared with joyous hearts and for the celebration of Christ’s birth. So we’re not only filled physically but also spiritually as we happily celebrate Christmas with our loved ones over a simple yet tasteful feast.

What’s Up with Food Labels?

While we want to experience convenience in food preparation, I am still wary of many packaged foods I see on the grocery shelves. I hesitate at jumping into bandwagon of poster-calling nutritious food when I haven’t checked out what’s written on the food labels yet. I realize that I can choose healthier foods for my kids and my family by simply reading food labels and knowing that those figures really mean. The five most important things to look out for are the carbohydrate, protein, fat, sodium and fiber content. These things should be well moderated according to the body type, age group and health conditions of each member of the family so I always read the labels and ensure healthier food choices for the family.

Curried Vinaigrette

I have been longing to eat for a green salad with a touch of something curried. Here is the recipe I found at the Philippine Starweek: Lydia D. Castillo column: Curried Vinaigrette.

A vinaigrette, is a mix of 3 parts olive oil, and one part vinegar, seasoned with salt and pepper. In the course of time, it has been enhanced with the addition of spices and herbs, sometimes onions and mustard.  Curry powder is the pulverized form of up to 20 spices, herbs and seeds.

1/2 cup lemon juice

1 medium sized onion, chopped

One knob ginger, chopped

2 tbsps soy sauce

2 tbsps honey

1.5 teaspoons curry powder

2 tbsps sesame oil

1 cup olive oil

Mix all ingredients in succession. Please blend well. Serve with any garden salad.

Easy Peasy!

Cooking Equipment

I was away for 2 weeks and pretty busy the moment  I arrived in Manila. There were plenty of open issues to attend to thus I could not attend to the house needs. Anyway, I was told that we need a new cooking pans. I have been planning to buy new plates as well as we have been using our Melamine plates for like 5 years already. I cant believed that long! Its pretty old and "gasgas" already.

With 3 growing up kids, I purposely didn't buy expensive plates as they will anyway break it but I guess now that they are older and aware of what are breakable and what nots, its high time to upgrade to something nice.

Carol the Carrot and Tiny Tree Tops

Vegetables are the hardest foods to introduce to toddlers and kids. These days, it is difficult to teach kids to eat healthy vegetables and fruits. One of my friends has this major dilemma on how will she teach her toddler son to start liking or simply have a taste of the vegetables she serves. One of the advices given to her by one of our friends is to play imagine with her kids and start giving names to some popular vegetables like the carrots, potatoes, lettuce, squash and broccoli. She said she also gave silly and sometimes hero like characteristics to these veggies to make her kids interested in eating them. I also tried it and called that orange root the x-ray vision carrots and I happily watched my son’s eyes light up and devour his meal!

Cebu Food Trip at Larcian

Oh yes, I am a certified food lover and a die hard fan of larcian. Why not? This is one of best place you can get a barbecue from Cebu. You haven't been to Cebu if you haven't tried Larcian and perhaps visit Taboan. Unfortunately, I wasn't able to bring my colleagues to Taboan as we didn't have enough time.

These were our orders before cooking: Pork barbecue, isaw, chorizo and squid. Of course, it comes with a lot of puso. I don't know the term in English.

And after a few minutes, here comes our orders! Looks so delicious!

Up close and personal:

A closer look of the squid. Looks so delish right?

The feast:

The happy blogger: hehehe I am always happy when I am full! lol

Forbidden Foods of Muslims

Surely you’ve been seeing foods in the supermarket that are tagged as “Halal”. The question is, do you know what is meant by Halal food?

Needless to say, Catholicism is not the only religion in the Philippines. There is also the Islam and when it comes to food consumption, Muslims only consume foods that are prescribed by their religion.

When we say “Halal”, it refers to food groups or drinks which are considered to be legitimate, allowable or permitted for consumption by everyone in their religion or sect.

How can you easily distinguish halal food in the Philippines? Take note of these food that are considered as harmful or, in Islam term, “haraam”.

  • Blood

  • Pork

  • Meat which came from already dead animal

  • Alcohol

  • Animals that have been beaten

Any food considered to be ‘haraam’ should always be avoided and is strongly restricted.

Why I came up with this post?  Because we had a Pakistani client who came to the Philippines last month and he requested for a halal food. :)

Lunch at Jo's Inato in Gaisano Mactan

We went to Cebu last Monday to look for a store / office space so we can open a branch in Cebu. We stayed at Golden Prince Hotel which I got for only USD 26.00 / night per room. I have another review to be posted here or in my other travel blogs. You watched for it.

I have other blog entry to be posted here soon for our food journey whilst in Cebu but as of now, I am eager to post the kinilaw and the pecho chicken that I tried at Jo's Inato.

The signature dish of Jo's Inato. Compared to Mang Inasal, their version is juicier and yummier. Believe me.

My all time favorite dish - kinilaw in Bisayan or kilawin in Tagalog.

I was fascinated looking at the ceiling with their typical native decor suitable for their restaurant set up.

Jewelry Bead Decorations for Debut Party

My cousin’s upcoming debut party is on its planning stage. We were all giving suggestions as to how to decorate the venue and make it a vintage inspired party. Aside from the cocktails and the main courses which my cousin specifically chose herself, we also come up with hanging colored beads from the ceilings and around soft lights to make it look like we’re having a multi-colored chandelier. For this we need to order jewelry beads in bulk to add more essence to the set up. My cousin also considers having bead decorations on the center table but we worry about having loose beads mixing up with the food.

Krispy Kreme's Original Glazed Donuts

After our lunch at Yakimix, we bought one box of original glazed donuts from Krispy Kreme for the kiddos. This is my sons favorite donuts and he has been pestering me for quite some time already. Unfortunately, there is no branch of Krispy Kreme near us in Bacoor so the best option is to get it from SM Mall of Asia.

After a short coffee break at Krispy Kreme, the driver picked us up just outside this branch. They also offer drive-thru. The next time my son request for this, its easier to just pick and go.

Engagement Chocolates

Any woman dreams about having her own dose of romance and looks forward to surprise wedding proposals from their beloved partner.  I’ve heard about proposals done with a song number done by the future groom with the band on their dinner date. I’ve also seen online wedding proposals that couples having a long distance relationship do and get married as soon as the one far away comes home. But one of my favorites so far is the one I’ve seen use chocolates with a hidden diamond engagement ring inside it. The guy just let the girl eat the chocolates on their date until she finally bit into something hard. It was simply a delicious and romantic surprise!

Sushi and Sashimi at Yakimix

I have tried many restaurants offering buffet food but Yakimix is my favorite. Not only that they offer a lot of food varieties from Japanese, Korean, Filipino and other dishes, they also offer the freshest from the catch. One of my favorite in this restaurant is the salmon sashimi - its really fresh and sweet = super yummy.

This was my first plate when we ate our lunch after visiting the Signs & Media World Expo on August 16, 2012 at the SMX Convention Center. We didn't really like the exhibit as it was only a few booths which are related to our business. Thus after a quick look, we opted to treat ourselves into a sumptuous meal.

Two Important Elements of a Party

Food and music has an undisputable relationship, in fact, modern chefs are usually including a touch of music in the name of their recipes while famous bands got their names from their favorite food. The association of food with music always signifies fun, laughter and delight. Parties, gatherings and family occasions will not be as exciting as it should be without the presence of these two important elements.

The family member who usually hosts the occasion is always making sure that these aspects are given proper attention for the guests and loved ones to enjoy. Aside from preparing the best family recipes, part of the preparation is to check out fender custom shop at Musician's   for the best musical instruments to be used for the gathering; this way everyone will have a great time eating and singing together.

All Time Favorite Chocolate : Nips

Pardon for my absence in this blog, I have been really busy lately, I guess you are aware already that I don't cook at home, thus this food blog is not really about my own cooking. Though I occasionally do like pizza, spaghetti, salad but thats about it. Not really fond of cooking! Sorry kids, but don't worry, this blog will not be boring as I will document all my food related journey.

For today, I am sharing you our ultimate chocolate favorite : the NIPS!

Do you like to eat Nips too? Hey, be honest - I am sure sometime in your life you have eaten this tiny bits of chocolate.

Sumptuous Dinner Served

We are again experiencing heavy rains after 2 days of  rest. I must admit I miss Mr. Sun already, our house are full of wet clothes. Not a pretty sight.

During rainy days, I long for good and healthy food. Tonight, as I arrived from work, hubby prepared a sumptuous dinner for us to share. No - he did not cook, he just bought the meat and veggies and asked Ate Weng to cook for us. But I tell yah - its really yummy! My favorite actually! Do you know what? Its H-U-M-B-A!  Yummy!

Maximize Your Online Shopping

It seems like you can now buy everything and anything online.  So before you go to your regular brick and mortar store, you should always check out major online retailers to see if you can get a better price.  But there is more to online shopping that just price, so here are some tips to maximize the benefits of online shopping.

Coupons Still Apply

The first thing to remember about online shopping is that the same discounts that apply to retail stores also apply to online stores.  However, it is almost easier to find deals for online stores because you can search for coupons by going to websites like Coupon Codes in the USA and searching for any company’s coupon codes.

People are even saving money on recipes by using vouchers found for food products, which are also available online.  So it doesn’t matter what you are looking to buy, because there are still discounts and promotions available.

 Get Free Shipping and Returns

The biggest gripe that online shoppers have had over the years are the prices paid for shipping and handling.  That was always the nice thing about shopping in a regular brick and mortar store – no shipping costs and no waiting for your product to arrive.  It was instant gratification.  However, most online retailers have figured that out, and many offer free shipping.  If you’re looking to buy something, check multiple retailers to make sure that you are getting the best prices on shipping (which should be free).  Also, many big online retailers, like Amazon and Zappos, are usually able to provide one to two day shipping at no extra cost because they have fulfillment warehouses located all over the United States.

And finally, look for retailers that don’t charge anything to ship back products, and offer returns for any reason.  If you bought the product in store, you wouldn’t have this problem, so you shouldn’t have it for online shopping either.  Many places will let you print out a free shipping label to send products back, and other companies, that have brick and mortar stores, even allow you to return it in store.

Cooking For the Family

Cooking for the family is one of the very important chores most mother loves doing at home. They want to see and hear the laughter of their family members while consuming her signature recipes. Aside from filling in their tummies, mothers are also helping their kids in performing many other things at home and in school too.

Communication with the kids while in school is very important for the mothers to monitor their safety that is why each of them has its own cellular phone. Instead of replacing a new cellular phone unit when the battery is weak, buying samsung cell phone batteries can be a better alternative. It can be considered as a good investment for the moms to be sure that their kids can be reached anytime.

Different Food Choices

Food is the word that when mentioned, can easily get every one’s attention. The choice of food varies according to the taste, preference and lifestyle of an individual. The state of a person’s health depends on the manner he chooses his food. A delicious and well-cooked food can create a positive atmosphere within the family or in any special occasion. There can be a lot of different food choices and sometimes cultural differences and practices also play a big role too. Meat such as beef, pork, and chicken are usually some of the common choices for food. On the other hand, health – conscious and weight – conscious individuals preferred to have fish, vegetables, pasta and bread as part of their daily meals.

Cutting Edge Cutlery

Professional chefs and amateur cooks know that top quality cutlery is an investment that will pay for itself time and time again. When you buy a knife from a top brand such as JA Henckels cutlery you are investing in a quality piece of equipment that will serve you well. A good chef knows each knife in his or her arsenal of kitchen cutlery has a specific purpose and can help to not only make food preparation easier but actually improve both the appearance and the flavor of the dish.

When you are slicing, dicing or mincing food you don’t want to use a dull knife that will mash or flatten the food; crisp, sharp cuts and slices are critical to maintaining flavor and appearance. If you have ever set out to slice a ripe tomato with the wrong knife you are no doubt familiar with the less than pleasant results – a bruised and flattened tomato, spurts of seeds and juice and misshapen slices are the unfortunate outcome. That’s why a good quality tomato knife is a worthwhile investment and a pleasure to use.

Similarly if you are serving steak it’s a wise idea to put a steak knife at every place setting so that friends and family can cut and savor each juicy morsel. Perhaps you’ve been at a party where a cheese plate was proffered but no proper cheese knife was available – it’s almost impossible to slice or spread cheese without a cheese knife so adding a few to your cutlery portfolio is essential. Another critical piece of cutlery is the trusty bread knife which can be used to slice bagels, muffins, can and rolls.

Traditional South African cuisine – 5 things to try

Whilst enjoying a relaxing holiday at one of Cape Portfolios villas, one thing you will have plenty of time to do is sample some traditional South African cuisine. Varied and colourful due to the combination of both indigenous and colonial influences, here are five things we think you should try!

South Africa’s national dish is known to have been around since the 17th century and is a mixture of curried meat and dried fruit topped with a delicious creamy egg sauce. You could say it’s reminiscent of the English Shepherd’s Pie, or perhaps the Greek Mousakka, but really the unique mix of spices make it quite deliciously unique.

This cured meat is given its flavour by being soaked in vinegar and spiced with sugar, coriander, salt and pepper. Popular with many South Africans, it is made from various meats including beef, game and even ostrich and is served in strips. Biltong is big business in South Africa and you’re sure to find plenty of places to sample it!

Boerewors and Pap

Pap is a traditional porridge made from ground maize and is eaten for breakfast with milk and sugar, or with a tomato sauce and Boerewors. These spicy sausages are made with various meats and formed in continuous spirals, but the secret to boerewors lies in the ingredients as they are made using only meat with very few ‘fillers’.

This milk tart has a distinct Dutch feel and is made by pouring a mixture of milk, sugar, flour, eggs and cinnamon into a sweet pastry crust. The flavour is different to that of the traditional English egg tart as a greater quantity of milk is used.

These sweet, sticky, syrup-coated doughnuts are twisted or braided like a plait, deep-fried in oil and then coated in cold sugar syrup. The name comes from a Dutch word and literally means ‘cookie’.

South Africa’s colourful cultural heritage delivers a wonderfully broad range of foods – I am sure you will not be disappointed!

On Nature’s Best and Gerber

My sister-in-law and I were searching the grocery for possible baby food that my nephew will like. We already tried those baby cereals and though he liked them, we still want some variety and bottled baby food seems to be the option we have now. While comparing the fruit flavors of Gerber and Nature’s best, a couple of nurses who were also buying baby foods where discussing where to buy scrubs. They wanted something quirky and chic which seems to be the trend now among many hospital workers. The nurses soon left with applesauce and plum juices. We followed their cue and picked up applesauce baby food as well. Hope my nephew likes this too.

Planning a Daily Menu for the Kids

Having picky kids when it comes to food is truly a frustrating experience for moms. You must always find ways to make your meals interesting and make them taste it to appreciate. Being creative with the menu seems to be a talent that most moms easily develop. But no matter how hard one try there will always be an issue somewhere. So start the week with a meal plan so you can budget your grocery before the week starts. Put nutritious, interesting and kid friendly meals on your priority. I was on this task when the special report on structured annuities came on and wondering about it, lost my focus on foods and the meal plan once again.

Pajama Party Cocktail Sandwiches

Pajama parties are very popular with teenagers and as moms, you understand how much little girls enjoy these time with their gal pals. My daughter recently hosted a pajama party with her closest friends. We talked about this before and decided to arrange her room so that they can just do their stuff there. She helped me prepare cocktail sandwiches made with tuna, chicken and eggs. It’s easy enough to prepare and filling too. We also got thinly sliced baguettes toasted and topped like a pizza. My daughter room has limited space but thanks to flat mounts that her dad installed, we claimed more space for the additional beds.

High School Rock Dinner Theme

Family dinners are such a great affairs for us. We are a big family and every now and then, the family organizes a barbecue or a dinner gathering for everyone to unwind and relax. During these occasions, food and music are the top two considerations for whoever is hosting. Recently, my brother and his wife came up with a high school rock dinner theme for the family gathering and presented us with their Zvex Fuzz Factory for some rocking music plus a great mix of steaks, quarter pounder burgers, corn and the cob and flowing sodas! The kids were all amazed and I think every pair would be thinking of themes to surpass this one, and everyone is really having a great time.

Taipei's Food Varieties

While traveling in Taiwan, I come to realized that Taiwanese are very health conscious. They are so particular with their food but one thing I observed, the taste is very light - at times, no salt! It was good for me, I also don't like salty food.

I wanted to share with you the different food Taipei has to offer. These photos are taken at Shillin Night Market. There were so many other food but will share it with you in the succeeding post.

I was so excited to take all the photos and wanted to share with my readers but was afraid for my data roaming cost. If only I have a bb playbook to match with Blackberry phone so I can jot down all the names of these varieties and maybe even the recipe that my friend dictated.

Oh well, better luck next time I guess! Do you love the food?

Making dining out fun; 5 things to try

Are you bored of the food served up by your local restaurant or takeaway? Would you be interested in trying a new and exciting culinary experience? If the answer is yes, then you'll want to check out the dining ideas in this blog post contributed by Bannisters, West Yorkshire's favourite potato snack producing company.

Summer Picnic

For a truly special day out it's well worth gathering family and friends for an indulgent picnic in the park. You could even pack some seasonal fruits or homemade potato salad for sharing on a gorgeous day in the sun.

If you'd rather not be restricted to a single dish then why not ask your local restaurant owner about the possibility of a buffet? Although some of the dishes may not be to your liking, there are bound to be a few surprising treats that really hit the spot.

Barbecue on the Beach

The Australians aren't the only ones who know how to rustle up a good beach barbie. All that it takes is a few hours of sunshine, some meaty or vegetarian bites, shop purchased disposable cooking kit and a strip of sand. You might even be tempted to bring an acoustic guitar for some evening strumming and singing.

It's fair to say that the most enjoyable culinary experiences aren't necessarily the most expensive. Indeed the variety of leaves that can be turned into delicious soups and salads are absolutely free to pick. As are the berries and fruits that can be plucked from the trees and bushes in many rural areas.

Hibachi Cooking

Given the large number of televised cooking shows, it is clear that the public has an interest in the preparation of top quality food. You could take this passion to new extremes by visiting a Hibachi restaurant, where Japanese culinary delights will be prepared before your very eyes.

5 Easy Weeknight Dinners

With all you have to do in a day it can be hard to get dinner on the table without turning to the best place to buy spices online. Good spices can kick your food up a notch so that you don’t have to go out anymore. It can save money when all of your spices are rolled up into one. And good spices help with getting dinner on the table more quickly when you don’t have to measure out tiny amounts of all kinds of flavorings. Here are five dinners to try on the weeknights to make your life easier.

1. Try baking some chicken.

This is a quick meal to prepare and it is both delicious and nutritious. All you need to do is pull the frozen chicken out of the freezer, plop it on a greased baking sheet, sprinkle on your favorite spices, and let it cook for 35 minutes or so. You can look at the bag for instructions, but it really is this simple. Chicken is one of the leanest meats you can eat. You can use lemon pepper, or almost anything, really.

2.    Try a salad.

Some delicious salad is another nutritious way to go. Grab a bag of greens or spinach and toss it with some dressing. If you have a problem keeping your bagged salad fresh, just buy heads of lettuce. It takes all of 3 minutes to chop up a head, including the clean up time. Throw some chicken or chickpeas on top for substance. Baby corn, bell peppers, crotons, broccoli bits, carrots, and other vegetables make great healthy toppings.

3.    Throw it in the Crockpot.

Turn to the best place to buy spices online for all your Crockpot needs. You can simply throw your meat or dish in the pot and let it cook on low while you work throughout the day. Throw in some onion soup mix and delicious flavorings, as well as broth to keep your meat tender. This can be a lifesaver for time.

4.    Make some noodles.

Just boil up some noodles or rice for the perfect base for any dish. You can throw any kind of sauce on top of the noodles to make a pasta dish. Rice is good under a can of soup or with some fried eggs and frozen peas. This way you can make your own fried rice without the oil.

5.    Soup is always a winner.

Make some easy soup. Just take whatever ingredients you have that work together and heat them to a simmer for about 15 minutes to mix the flavors. You can make cream of broccoli with a simple white sauce, milk, and broccoli.

Simplify your meals and life now by making easy dinners.

Sunday Barbeque Affairs

Sundays are a usual family feast when your siblings and their families take turns are hosting dinner and barbeque affairs. It a great time to brag about your cooking skills and the new recipes you discovered by having your loved ones rate and appreciate your cooking. It is also a great time for the kids to bond a play together while the adults talk about everything under the sun. It’s a great time to unload stresses at work, politics, sports and workman compensation issues. With these family affairs you get different insights and opinions to help you make up your mind on whatever it is that’s bothering you all week.

Office Parties

For my husband’s office party, they usually encourage them to just bring pot luck for us to taste the different specialties that their family has to offer. We would usually assign who’s brings finger foods and appetizers, and what pasta to cook for the main course. Office parties are fun especially if you’re with good friends and you have great things to talk about. When men starts talking about steel arch buildings, basketball and video games, it’s a clue for us wives to start catching up and talk some little gossip over cakes and coffee while the kids bond with each other and enjoy messing up the office.

Indoor Water Fountains

Whenever I visit establishments, I always adore offices, homes and restaurant with adorable water fountains installed. It is simply pleasing in the eye and gives a charming look to all the visitors. There are several types and styles of water fountains. There are made of stones, plastics and metals. It simply depends on interest of the owner. As an added bonus, perhaps you can add a stunning lights. I simply love to have indoor water fountains installed in my own home someday.

Reserving a Restaurant Table

Mothers Day just passed and I am pretty sure you have a nice story to tell. For me, I simply greeted my mom, mother-in-law, aunts and other mothers by text message and through social media. We did not do anything special that day but just the normal bonding time with my kids. I wanted to go out with my kids but I wasn't sure whether the restaurant near us can accommodate us at short notice. If only they offer a live answering service so booking for a restaurant table is easy.

Changing Your Family Dining Experience

Vacations should be expensive or take you so far from your home. Even simple log cabin furniture can set a cool and cabin ambiance that can take your family on a different dining experience. In most cases, having the right settings simply sets the mood for the kind of party or occasion you want to achieve. In preparing and setting your usual weekend dinner, be sure to change your dining room setting by adding accents such as wall decors and curtains. Furniture such as your dining table and chairs may not easy be exchanged but using the right decors can give you different ambiance each time you set a different cuisine.

Hongkong Eating and Dining Tips

Hongkong is the most frequented destination for a short getaway and shopping experience. Chinese food is now new to us, but better be prepared and be informed of the Hongkong eating tips:

1. Don't be squeamish. Tables are cleaned up before you take a seat.

2. The large plastic or metal pitchers of steaming hot tea that are placed on your table are for drinking and washing your spoon/chopsticks.

3. It's easier to get a table for 2 to 4. If you are a group, be prepared to sit scattered all over the restaurant.

4. Be prepared to share your table should the restaurant is full.

5. Don't mind the restaurant owners and staff who wish you will vacate the moment you finish your food. Just enjoy your food and your conversation.

Lastly, enjoy the food fellas! Remember the saying here: Good Food = Good Mood!

Dining Out with Entertainment

When dining out, aside from the food specialty of a certain restaurant, I also check the place whether they offer some kind of entertainment. It's nice to be entertained while eating a sumptous meal. I find it specially romantic when guitars are played using Eminence speakers. I heard a lot of bands are using this kind of speakers.

Its been sometime since we went out with the family. We don't have a car at the moment thus all of our plans are all home-based. A barbecue dinner at home with a good wine will also do the job.

Identifying Different Types of Cocktail Drinks

Nobody really knows how the word “cocktail” ever came up, but over the years, more and more cocktail drinks have been popularized such as tequila sunrise, cosmopolitans, zombie, margaritas and daiquiris. Whatever the beginnings were, mixing and adding of flavorings such as fruit juices to liquors, vodka, whiskey and gin made the bitter taste more tolerable and provided party goers with a more enjoyable drink. But how well do you know your cocktails? There are probably a thousand types of drinks and mixes that fall under the cocktail drinks, but here are the major types of categories.

These are called mixers because of the importance of the mixers that goes with the spirit to create unique cocktails. A Bloody Mary would never be as unique without Tabasco and Worcestershire sauces. Or what would a martini be without vermouth? They probably won’t be as popular as they are today. Mixers can be anything from fresh juices, sodas, creams and tonics which allows bartenders unlimited opportunities to explore and experiment with new cocktails. Some of those juices that make great mixers are tomato, lemon, orange, lime and cranberry while club, cola and lime/lemon sodas are also great for mixed cocktail drinks.

Spirited Cocktail Drinks

These are cocktails mixed with gin, rum recipes, vodka and whiskey. Some popular spirited cocktails include the following:

• Pink Lady – gin, lemon juice, grenadine and egg.
• English Rose – gin, grenadine, apricot brandy, lemon juice and dry vermouth.
• Strawberry Daiquiri – light rum, lime juice, triple sec and strawberries.
• Piña Colada – light rum, coconut cream and pineapple juice.
• Grand Rum Toddy – rum, lime juice, orange liqueur and hot water.
• Cosmopolitan – vodka mix with vodka, cranberry juice and cointreau
• Mudslide – vodka, Irish cream liqueur and coffee liqueur.
• Imperial Fizz – blended whiskey, soda and lemon juice
• Irish Coffee – Irish Whiskey mixed with coffee.

“Mock” tails

Cocktails have higher calorie content compared to wine and beers because of their added sugar from the combination of alcohol, juices and mixers. Wine only have 22-24 calories per ounce, spirits used for cocktail drinks have around 65-74 which falls on the 2nd to the highest liqueur category with 85-105 calories per ounce. Mocktails were then created for people who wanted the option of drinking cocktails less the alcohol and the calories. Pregnant women and those who do not like the taste of alcohol can still enjoy flavorful drinks and mixes through this category.

Shots and Shooters

These drinks are usually potent and short mixed drinks which are served in a shot glass. They are meant to be consumed in a quick tip of glass and a single swallow. Some of the most popular and widely available shooters include the Jäger Bombs which are made from Jägermeister plus Red Bull; the Jell-O shots made by mixing vodka and flavored jell-o and served in small cups, and the Snake Bite shots which is a mix of Yukon Jack plus some lime juice.

Other types of Cocktail Mixes

Sparkling wine and champagne may also be mixed with spirits to form some sort of cocktails. Even beer can work well with mixers but they would no longer be cocktails technically because they are no longer spirit based. Punches are also mixes of other spirits such as the Sangria which is composed of ginger ale, brandy and red wine.

Earning From Your Hobby

Cooking may just be your hobby, or maybe baking. Have you ever thought of earning from it? There are basically two directions you can choose from and each has its own pros and cons. What others may consider a pro may be a con for you and vice versa. It all depends on each one's situation and outlook.

One direction is to be an entrepreneur. You can put up an eatery or a bakeshop and sell what you have been cooking or baking as a hobby. That way, no only are you doing your hobby but you are also earning. You'll need a capital, though. The other direction is be an employee. You can always get help with resume writing tips online.

Make Your Own Kitchen Show

Different people have different ways of cooking. While others do their own, others follow. There simply is a divide for those who love to cook. One side cannot cook without a recipe and the other side creates his or her own recipe. Noting it down is a different story. Despite the many cooking shows available, there is always room for more because what one can offer is still different from the others. Whether you are creating your own recipe or you are trying out the recipe of others, having your own kitchen show will give you a particular audience. The quality of the video and sound will help them stay or leave. Why not try a behringer.

Dealing with Kitchen Emergencies with Tap and Die

Have you ever been too busy preparing and cooking then suddenly your equipment breaks? It can be quite frustrating to deal with broken cooking equipment such as the oven or stove and your momentum with cooking is suddenly cut off. In these emergencies, it would be best to have some tap and die ready to help you fix things out and get you back on track of cooking. Keeping these tools handy would greatly benefit home and kitchen repairs especially if your mood for cooking couldn’t be stopped with any breakdowns. Good food should not go sour just because some equipment wouldn’t cooperate!

Healthy Food Choices for the Lenten Season

During Lenten Season, the Catholic world follows age-old traditions and one of them fasting in 40 days. Most observes exercise their faith by doing sacrifices that involves food such as refraining from consuming meat and others that we do like and feast on when the season is over.

Sacrificing our unhealthy food preferences for healthier ones should not only be limited to Lenten season. There are ways you can turn your healthy food choices for the Lenten Season into you preferred ones even without the feeling of sacrificing and fasting.

Lent provides many the excuses to eat healthier – more vegetables and fruits, as opposed to the usual meat and meat products we consume. However, lent should be understood as a time to set your diet right and for you make healthier and this is not really not missing out some food items. Healthy food choices for the Lenten Season can be preferring to less meat and more beans and legumes, more grains such as brown rice, quinoa and rice pasta, less refined sugar and sweets, more fiber, less saturated fats, dairy processed products and eating more organic produce.

Lenten season provides a window for us to exercise our faith through fasting and better food choices. But you can improve your life physically, mentally and spiritually with the grace of God and hopefully continue your healthier preferences even after Lent.

Coffee Break at Dencio's Tagaytay

Right beside the Korean restaurant, there is a company selling second hand items like appliances, furnitures, fixtures like metal switch plates and clothing.

I wanted to take a look but my boss declined our request as we still have to go to Trece Martires, Alfonso and Tagaytay.

Anyway, my day yesterday was basically full! But not about my usual routine in the office but about eating out and driving around. When we reached Tagaytay, we rested at Dencio's for a short coffee break.

Still mesmerize by the beauty of the place, thus, I can't leave the place without posing with the famous Taal Volcano in the background.

Cold Bibim Guksu at Dae Jang Gum Korean Restaurant In Cavite

We went to Trece Martires, Cavite yesterday to look for a 6,500 square meters property. My boss is interested to look at a lot for possible conversion to warehouse and farm. He loves animals as a matter of fact, in the industrial compound that we are currently renting now, he has potbelly pigs, goats, chickens and dogs.

Anyway, on our way to the property, we dropped at Dae Jang Gum Korean Restaurant. As usual, we were immediately offered the usual appetizers:

Appetizers in small portions are offered in most Korean Restaurants for free. The moment, you require extra portions, some would charge for a fee while others still give for free. These foods have to be eaten prior to the serving of our main course.

For today, we wanted to try their cold noodles. Yes, cold! Meaning, it is served with ice even! I choose this yummy Bibim Guksu at Php 230.00/serving (USD 5.00). By its appearance - you can say its Spicy!

The restaurant is in CEPZA Bacao Diversion Road, General Trias, Cavite, very near King Bee Restaurant. The restaurant mostly served the Koreans from the CEPZA. They also offer free wifi internet and even through network cable.

High Quality Ink Cartridges

Tn450 ink cartridges and tn650 cartridges are outstanding and efficient high grade level ink cartridges. Whether you operate a printer in your home or have to use a high grade industrial printer at work, both printers can benefit from getting the correct ink cartridges. Using HP printer products saves you both time and paper. One time I was reporting for work, doing business as usual and had a very large office report to print out. The ink wasn't quite completely doing its job, meaning it would be spurting out a few lines and then just completely skip over a few more. Obviously, whether in a professional environment or not, this is not appropriate behavior for a printer. We found out that the last person responsible for replacing the ink cartridges ended up buying them off Ebay and got a bit ripped off. Although I'm all for saving money, I would agree with my coworkers that when it comes to office materials we should be expected to splurge just to keep productivity up. Now I was left with a horribly done quarter report and a deadline steadily approaching. Luckily I easily was able to look up the model number and find the correct printer cartridges that were of enough quality and were still affordable. So after looking at what both Canon and HP, I decided to go with the HP ink cartridges offered. This was due to the fact that I had prior experience with the company and was familiar with both their technology and their great customer service. Needless to say after making the much need switch, the printer was working perfect again and everyone in the office was thankful that I actually knew what I was doing. I think that the next time anything needs to be done in the public office, people will just ask me next time. I have no problem with that because it just improves my status and makes my work easier.

Maintain a Healthy Regimen

Who does not love his or her own self? That is actually the default of human nature. Oftentimes, though, loving one's self is being misunderstood as getting all the good feeling in terms of good taste, fun night and outrageous happenings. Like, eating junk food tastes real good and it gives a really good feeling when you have eaten so much of it. Having a wild party with unlimited booze at the wee hours of the night is really fun for many. Is it loving your body when you are actually destroying it with poison? Before it's too late you should be thinking of a healthy regimen and start getting addicted to healthy food.

Watch the Food You Eat

There are people who have oily skin and if nothing is done about it, it looks gross and tends to shun other people away. Such people should always bring something to wipe off the oil so as not to unnecessarily get negative attention. Sometimes the food that they eat causes their faces to be oily. If it is already in their genes and they still eat oily foods then it will be too much. They can instead change their diet and try seaclear to manage the excess excretion of oil. While this problem exists more on teens, adults are not exempt.

Food Processing Business

If you want to go into business, having it connected with food is one sure way to be successful because food is needed by anyone alive. It is sure as the rising sun to succeed unless what you are selling is rotten or not fit to eat. It is important that your area is clean. Proper hygiened is a must. Water should always be available. If your factory is located in a place where water is not readily available you should do something about it like have one of the water pumps at so that you are sure to have clean water any time it is needed

Food Storage While On Motorbike

When riding a motorbike, having any extra baggage that you have other than what you have on your body, is a hassle. Some bikes have a storage compartment but usually that is for tools and other important stuff that you make sure will not get lost or ruined especially when it rains. As a bike rider it is not always convenient to stop by a fastfood to eat. When you buy food, it is usually faster than what fastfoods offer. More like what can be bought from a grocery store, pop open and eat. If you have one of those Olympia Motorcycle Jackets with spacious pockets to carry your stuff, that is the best. You can even reach out from time to time and eat while driving.

Mark Your Offline Homebased Business

Homebased businesses have been prevalent these days more than ever. It gets one to be at two places at the same time: home and work. While many of the homebased workers do so through the internet, there are still those who does by having their local neighborhood and nearby towns people their market. Probably a wedding cake maker, a dressmaker or a tailor, it is important that there is one of those house markers to be easily found. As with any business, referral plays a big role in making it grow. If people tend to get lost they will just find another one that can be easily found.

Looking for Birthday Cake Designer

My eldest son will celebrate his 8th birthday tomorrow. I have been looking for a cake designer lately, but I can not find anyone close to our place at short notice. I have a blogger friend Iris of Project Happiness who also bake fondant cakes (its her business actually) but unfortunately she cannot attend to my order as she is leaving or perhaps left already for the province. She was the one who made the cake and cute cupcakes for for Alexa's 3rd birthday in December 2011.

As the birthday is tomorrow, I don't have any choice but to order from Goldilocks or Red Ribbon. Hope someone can advise me a better cake shop.

This is my entry for Project 366 Blog Photo Challenge

Potluck Dinner Every Saturday Night

Sunday is a family day, and for a working mommy like me - is a cooking day! This morning, I cooked a home-made, all time favorites of my kids - tinolang baboy and rice for brunch. We arrived late last night after attending a potluck dinner party at JP's house.

We bought pork meat for grilling, pizza and litson manok for sharing. Some prepared barbecue in sticks, grilled shrimp, spaghetti, and pork liempo with one bottle of beer. It was good for the kids too as they were able to play together.

This plan of potluck dinner every Saturday night is a good idea. Next Saturday, we will be at ME's house. After all these activities, I am pretty sure that I will gain weight. Perhaps, I should think now of buying yoga mats so I can enroll myself to a yoga class.

Cheap to Buy Fruits and Vegetables in Divisoria

We went to Caloocan yesterday to close one of our company's bank account. Its been a while since we had a transaction and the account is already a dormant account. Thus to save the deductions from being debited, we closed it for good and will just concentrate on other banks. Better than way!

Anyway, prior to going home, we went to Divisoria to pay a visit (psst shopping) to 168. But instead of going to 168, we gave 999 a shot. It was my first visit for Mall 999, its the mall beside 168. I was able to buy pajamas for my kids, outdoor shirts for my hubby, and other home accessories. I was able to buy custom name tags for my kids party. I am not sure yet if I will use this for Francis 8th birthday or will for Christoph's 7th birthday in June.

Just before heading home, there are several fruit and vegetable vendors just outside the mall. I was able to buy 3 pcs of cauliflower for only Php 50.00, 3 pcs of cabbage for Php 20.00, one portion of tomatoes for Php 10.00 and a portion of onions for Php 10.00. Amazingly cheap! For fruits, I bought 1 kilo of seedless grapes for Php 100.00, one pack of apples for Php 50.00 and 2 kilos of mango. Yum yum!

Planning a Romantic Date With Music for Valentines Day

Its Valentines Day soon and for sure, a lot of married couples, live-in partners or lets just say - sweethearts are already planning how to celebrate the special day of the heart. How about you? Have you booked any hotel or perhaps a dinner date with your partners?

A lot of hotels and restaurants are now offering a package deals for the couple. I have seen a few but never get to my mind of booking. I have bought several coupons from group buying deals like dinner in a 5-star hotels, cruise around Manila Bay and even a family dinner complete with suzuki micro grand digital piano and all for the bin. All expired now! What a waste of moolah!

When I was younger, it was always about eating out and disco dancing till the wee hours of the morning but now that we are married and have kids, we prefer a date with soft music around.

Now that hubby is in Dumaguete, even if I want to plan our valentines date, we might not be able to utilize again so better save the money for now and lets see come Valentines Day. :)

Going Fishing Today

The kids are getting ready now to go to the farm to fish. Its not really a pond but we want the kids to experience how to catch a fish. We made a make-shift fish catcher hoping to catch some. If we cant catch, then will just buy some nice fish for grilling for our dinner tonight. I heard that Grills Direct has an ongoing weber grill sale onsite.

Anyway, time for me to end this post as we need to catch some earthworms first.

Tikoy For Chinese New Year

Happy Chinese New Year foodies! On Monday, the Philippine government declared as a non working holiday for the first time thus the celebration of the Chinese Year in Manila was extra ordinary. Not that I was there but it was evident in the news channel. We are Chinese but we always eat Tikoy during Chinese New Year.

Tikoy or Nián gāo is a type of rice cake made from glutinous rice flour and considered as a must served during Chinese Year. Its normally fried deep in egg. Its sweet, so sticky and yes yummy! It was my plan earlier that I should prepare something like what the Chinese do, but didn't have the time to do it. We recently just moved to Dumaguete and have plenty of things to arrange and do.

I heard that the people born on Year of the Dragon will not succeed this year, first, they'll lose their job! Oh well, I just lost mine! It's a bad news but I am hoping and praying that things will get better. Hope one day when all are in places, I could buy myself a diamond eternity band. I think I deserved this!

Anyway, lets all eat tikoy now! This is actually my afternoon snacks!

Less Pork, More Fish

Lechon lechon lechon, yes thats probably the number one food served during Christmas season. And yes, for me, I had enough lechon last December thus for my new resolution this year, I will not eat lechon forever! Nah, just kidding! Oh well, lets be conservative and say - 1 month. And next month, will update again. Hopefully, this resolution will stretch to 2 months or even 1 year. Do you believe in that? I doubt it! lol

Anyway, for January 2012, less pork more fish! You see, I am really craving for fish and other seafoods after the recent flashfloods in Mindanao. Of course, everyone is afraid to eat fish. So while we were in Mindanao - Cagayan de Oro and Bukidnon specifically - we feasted on pork and chicken all the time!
